What is semiotics?

Louise sent me this link about semiotics and I too found it very interesting. Well worth a quick read through.

I have suddenly developed an interest in semiotics … this is a science around the symbolism of objects and colours, esp in particular cultures - and is often used in advertising, branding and the media without us even realising ….. this interesting website explains it quite well and is interesting food for though - I thought you might all be interested too!

This is another way of saying that the map is not the territory, the menu is not the food etc.

A picture of a cow is not a cow. Embraced by many linguists (Including Dr. John Grinder) the expression was first coined in 1933 in a book called ‘Science and Sanity’ by Alfred Korsybski (not sure about the spelling - quoting from memory)

There is a book out at the moment called ‘The Black Swan’ which uses different language to explain the same idiotic human phenomenon - there’s a lot of it about.

The human mind - an odd thing - it just fascinates me to think we can be influenced even by a ‘mythical sign’ - something we have never actually seen but has been absorbed by the culture we live in - I mean, I have never seen the James Dean film ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ but I still somehow understand signs associated with it in my sub-conscious - we are almost over-burdened by these ’signifiers’ - - they’re everywhere, influencing both sexes. And as it says on the website, you can choose to step inside or outside of the framework they construct for us but it is almost impossible to ignore them altogether… I sometimes wish I was a dog.
